In mid-December 2016, the Red Cross responded to the war in Syria by sending teams from the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) to help with the evacuation of Aleppo. In tandem with the humanitarian organization Syrian Arab Red Crescent, ICRC teams sent ambulances and buses across battle lines in Aleppo to assist those trying to flee the embattled area of the city.
However, on December 16 evacuation efforts came to a halt as tension rose between the two conflicting sides. On December 19 the teams resumed the evacuation, with the Syrian Arab Red Crescent reporting the evacuation of 5,000 individuals from eastern Aleppo on 75 buses. As of late December, the ICRC and Syrian Arab Red Crescent teams had helped to evacuate over 10,000 individuals.
The Syrian Arab Red Crescent and ICRC also served hot meals to thousands of individuals at the shelters in Jibreen, where they worked to improve living conditions by setting up showers and latrines and delivering clean water.
